Placenta Services

The benefits of the placenta are many, and are only beginning to be fully understood. The virtues of the placenta are commonly extolled for helping to combat "baby blues" and postpartum depression, but the benefits are so much greater and offer significant health improvements to mother, baby, and family alike.

Benefits of placental ingestion include:

- decreased risk of postpartum mood disorders

- increased energy levels

- decreased postpartum bleeding

- increased milk supply for improved breastfeeding

- improved sleep and decreased insomnia

In addition to its numerous benefits for hormonal regulation and energy levels, the placenta offers many benefits for postpartum healing. The placenta includes vitamins, minerals, and stem cells, and replenishes much-needed nutrients lost during birth. Ingesting the placenta in one of several forms helps to replenish the B vitamins and the hormones Oxytocin, Human Placenta Lactogen (HPL), and Placenta Opioid Enhancing Factor (POEF). New studies are also drawing a link between placenta capsules and a decrease in symptoms related to depression, menopause, and Alzheimer's. Additional research on the value of the placenta is available here.

We offer placenta encapsulation, tincture, salve, and art services for any interested families, including those we serve as birth or postpartum doulas. Please call us to schedule based on your due date, and be sure to be in touch immediately after your birth so we can encapsulate your placenta within the first few days postpartum. Placenta preparation is best done within 72 hours of the birth; if it cannot be done in that time frame, we recommend freezing the placenta as soon as possible to retain the vitamins, minerals, hormones and stem cells.

Our placenta encapsulators adhere to the highest health and safety standards. All preparation is handled according to the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens standard (29 CFR 1910.1031).
